This picture is taken in the Oosterdok in Amsterdam. In the background on the right side you see the silhouet of the church of Saint Nicolaas. Because Saint Nicolaas is the patron of the sailors, in many ports a Nicolaas-church was built, facing the harbour. This way the leaving ships could count on a prosperous trip! |
